Lisbon is a cosmopolitan city with a chequered and troubled history. The wide, uneven and multicoloured sea of houses stretches over the seven hills, from which one can enjoy magnificent panoramas. Lisbon's sights are geographically divided into two main areas: The city centre itself and its neighbourhoods of Alfama, Bairro Alto, Baixa, Graça and Rato. Alfama is Lisbon's oldest district, formerly a poor people's quarter with steep streets, narrow squares, fish markets and small restaurants, crowned by São Jorge Castle.
The Baixa or Lower Town is the Pombaline Lisbon that the Marquês de Pombal had built after the great earthquake (1755) with dead-straight, wide streets. Bairro Alto, the upper town, is also a poor quarter, but unlike Alfama, it seems to be decaying inexorably and yet exudes its very own charm. On the edge of Bairro Alto is the former artists' quarter Chiado. Belém is home to two of Lisbon's most famous landmarks: the Torre de Balem and the Monestario dos Jerónimos.
20.00 Dinner at Bodega BY THE WINE Rua das Flores 41.
By The Wine - José Maria da Fonseca is a relaxed and cosmopolitan place in the heart of Chiado, with a carefully selected gastronomic offer that leaves no one indifferent. Inaugurated in 2015, By the Wine-José Maria da Fonseca exclusively presents the entire wine range of José Maria da Fonseca, founded in 1834 and the oldest producer of bottled table wines in Portugal, including some rarities.
