London-born Stuart Pigott is Germany's best-known wine journalist. Thanks to his trenchant descriptions of wine, his British sense of humour - and presumably his extravagant clothes - he is also a household name to many outside the wine world. The Berliner-by-choice knows the wines of Gut Hermannsberg like the back of his hand. For the past two years, Pigott has been working as a Riesling ambassador for the Nahe winery. Of course, he has been a fan for much longer. As early as 2013, in his then function as wine critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, he named the cellar master of Gut Hermannsberg, Karsten Peter, "Rising Winemaker of the Year", followed three years later by the title "Winemaker of the Year". Pigott wrote, "[The wines] demonstrate what 'racy' and 'mineral' can mean in dry Riesling. They offer an extreme amount of idiosyncrasy, perhaps even some genius [...]."
Since the couple Jens Reidel and Dr. Christine Dinse acquired the former royal Prussian winegrowing domain in 2010, Peter has been cellar master at Gut Hermannsberg and uncompromisingly relies on Riesling and the terroir of the legendary Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube. He does not want to "make" wine, but rather to give the individual vineyard sites the opportunity to develop. No wonder, since the 30 hectares of steep slopes of volcanic origin, all of which are VDP Great Sites, have a unique geology. Peter and his team have thus completely redefined the dry Nahe Riesling and given Gut Hermannsberg back the splendour it already had at the beginning of the 20th century.
